Rebuilding from the Inside Out: Why Phase 1 is Everything

When I began designing the upcoming 8-week program for The Brandy Balance, I knew exactly where we had to start. In fitness, there is often a push to jump straight into heavy lifting or high-intensity sessions. However, Phase 1 of my program focuses strictly on deep core stabilization and the art of the breath. It is designed to establish a stable foundation so the body can move with intention, control, and safety before progressing into deeper strength work.

This phase is deeply personal to me. For over two decades, I lived with severe diastasis recti—a full-length separation of my abdominal muscles from my pregnancies that runs from the very bottom of my sternum all the way down to my pelvis. Because I have EDS (Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome), my connective tissue lacks the natural elasticity to knit back together. I spent 20 years trying various traditional fitness routines with little success. It wasn’t until I focused on Pilates-style 360-degree core stabilization and diaphragmatic breathing that my core strength finally improved. Learning how to truly engage the deep stabilizers and use the breath as an internal support system transformed how my body functions.

The goal of prioritizing Phase 1 isn't to slow you down; it is to teach your body how to protect itself. By mastering this deep internal connection, the focus is on supporting the spine, managing internal pressure through proper breathing, and stabilizing the hips and pelvic floor. This phase lays the essential groundwork for The Fusion Method, ensuring that when we eventually layer in strength training and mobility, your movements are built on a solid, resilient foundation.
